![]() The case interior is clean, and the original strap is included. The handle has been cracked where it meets the brackets, but has enough grip left in this area to at least hang on for a quick photo. This case is very clean, with three working latches. There is also a tiny crack in the plastic pickguard at the input jack which has been repaired. The neck profile is also remarkably clean and smooth. There is virtually no difference in the gradient of the burst hidden beneath the pickguard when compared to the exposed finish! The body shows light vertical lacquer checking and a few small chips and nicks around the edges of the slab body, but no serious wear of any kind. Cosmetically, this is a very clean example, with an unfaded sunburst finish that transitions from an amber center to deep maroom edges. The heel of the neck has the original grease pencil date of 12/61. All of the original plastic parts are present along with the original bridge and knurled metal knobs with flawless chrome plating. ![]() Even the original masking tape that holds the cloth covered wire in place is mint. The aluminum pickguard shield retains the name "Aurora" noting the Fender factory employee who wired up the guitar decades ago. The electronics work as they should with untouched solder joints, the stock yellow Astron tone cap, and Stackpole pots that date to '61. On the headstock, the original Kluson single line tuners are in fantastic shape, and the Musicmaster decal is near mint. The guitar plays cleanly in all positions, the truss rod is responsive, and the neck is straight. The frets show only faint wear on the crowns of frets 1-3, with virtually no wear up the board. The thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard sports the original fretwire on the 22" scale, and these frets retain their full, original height. There's light flame figuring in the maple, and the neck retains its glossy smooth nitro lacquer on the entire profile. The maple neck features a C shaped profile that has moderate depth at the nut and gets notably chunky as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard, filling the palm comfortably. Restrung with 11-50 strings and dialed in for optimal action and intonation here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Musicmaster is ready for stage and studio use. Since the pickup is essentially a flat pole piece version of a Stratocaster single coil, the guitar delivers a very detailed and round sound that sparkles and twangs with the best. Featherweight at 6lbs 2oz and very acoustically resonant, the Musicmaster is simple, elegant, and very fun to play. This Pre-CBS short scale Fender is the little brother of the Duo Sonic, and this collector-grade example comes complete with the original hardshell case and even the burgundy leather strap.
